The weekend will focus on a combination of lifestyle and still life photography and styling. Itinerary includes opening lectures by each instructor, demonstrations, and guided hands-on styled photo shoots each day. We'll wrap up the weekend with a cooking demonstration by award-winning Lila Haynes, who will be showcasing a seasonal recipe. We'll start the weekend with a welcome cocktail hour from 3-4pm on Friday as guests arrive. Saturday will run from 9am to 930pm. Sunday will start at 9am and end mid-afternoon (around 3pm).

Lila will be welcoming us into her home, which is the location of the cooking studio. The downstairs of her beautiful home will be the backdrop for our workshop, with plenty of seating and space for creating, in addition to the use of her commercial kitchen. Lila will be giving a cooking demonstration, prepping all of the food for our photo shoots, as well as preparing seasonal meals for the weekend.

Suzanne will discuss the essentials of styling product photography for advertising, working with problematic foods on set, best tools and tricks for styling, general composition, prop shopping and following your creative instinct.

Jenn will be giving lessons on her creative process when it comes to the best uses of light, composition, equipment and settings for food photography, as well as sharing her personal experiences being in the industry - such as working with clients, marketing yourself, making connections, and more!

Lila, Jenn, and Suzanne all have backgrounds in teaching and sharing knowledge of their trades. Teaching workshops is important to all 3 us for so many reasons. Workshops become so much more than giving lessons to strangers; Workshops build community, lasting friendships, support collaboration over competition, rejuvenate, and inspire us (and hopefully you!) to keep creating beautiful imagery. Our goal is that you will leave with a deeper understanding of yourself, your creative strengths, and perhaps a new sense of direction.

*This workshop is intended for intermediate+ level photographers who are already comfortable shooting in manual mode*

“The Makers and Gatherers Workshop opened my eyes in so many ways. I discovered a career path that I am truly passionate about, learned the fundamentals that I needed to start my journey and discovered a community of creatives that support, encourage and inspire one another. It was truly worth every penny and I would go back in a heartbeat!”

- Reagan B.

“Opportunities like this [workshop] are often hard for me to partake in and without your kindness I don’t think that I’d be feeling as inspired to move forward with my interests and aspirations as I feel today. I truly do feel as though I walked away from your retreat with creative ideas spilling at the seams. I hold a better understanding of photo styling through your demos, social media with our roundtable discussion, and our one-on-one meetings.”

- Jessica B.

“The biggest one [lesson] was that you don't have to be a 'type' of person to do something like go on a retreat. All you have to be is a person willing to learn and grow. I honestly couldn't have been more happy with the workshop and wouldn't change a thing. You did a great thing Suzanne; I really feel that I'm part of a community from this event. The sense of community and learning [was most valuable]. I felt like I learned, made connections and also friends, and it was fantastic.”

- Alyx W.

“Being able to be open and connect with strangers who share similar interests as well as learn more about food/prop styling and writing [was most valuable]. I hope you'll do more [workshops] in the future! It's such a great thing to get creatives all together!”

- Jenn B.

The workshop will operate on a schedule in order to fit all the juicy details into our time together! While there will still be a natural pace and time to flow creatively, we ask that you come ready to learn, with the mindset that you'll be attending multiple "classes."

With the goal of keeping a tight-knit working atmosphere, we are offering a maximum of 7 spots for this workshop.

Do you tend to move quickly with activities? We’ve got you covered! This is the perfect time to flex your creative muscles, with our combined prop collection available for you to style and photograph your own vignettes. We’ll have our favorite books and magazines on hand to peruse for inspiration, as well as a steady stream of snacks to enjoy!

Bring a DSLR camera, and a collaborative, supportive outlook!
